RETURN TO THE “MÉTIER D’HISTORIEN”: HISTORIANS AND THEIR SOURCES TODAY

In the thirtieth year of publication of our journal, the AUASH editorial board invites contributions reflecting on historical sources and methodology. This anniversary coincides with a year marked by two significant yet underrepresented events: the entry of Marc Bloch—author of the remarkable Apologie pour l’histoire ou métier d’historien (notable for the context of its creation)—into the Panthéon on June 23, and the passing of Carlo Ginzburg, the renowned pioneer of microhistory, on June 16. Rather than a purely commemorative approach, which both distinguished historians undoubtedly deserve, our goal is to foster critical reflection. We encourage papers that examine contemporary historical writing, particularly as the rapid advancement of AI technology challenges the resilience and adaptability of traditional research methods. From conventional approaches to innovative methodologies that emerged long before the rise of AI, as well as the latest practices in the field, all share a foundational reliance on historical sources. We welcome submissions on these or related topics from the fields of history, archaeology, art and architectural history, as well as other socio-humanistic disciplines that utilize historical sources.
