In the second half of the 19th century, the modernization process increasingly impacted Romanian society, reaching even rural areas. Significant events contributed to the modernization of Romanian society and the formation of an elite. The church played an important role, becoming the most important institution for Romanians in the dual monarchy. In this context, the Diocese of Arad, led by Bishops Ioan Mețianu and Iosif Goldiș, supported the modernization process and the formation of an elite among Romanians.
[1] Province of the Dual Monarchy bounded by the Tisa, Mureș and Danube rivers. After World War I it was divided between Romania, Hungary, and Yugoslavia. In Romania it currently includes the counties of Timiș and Caraș and part of Arad county.

[4] The hierarchical separation was a process initiated by Bishop Andrei Şaguna within the Orthodox Church of the Dual Monarchy through which the Romanian bishoprics left the authority of the Patriarchate of Karlowitz, led by Serbian hierarchs, and came under the authority of the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Transylvania, led by Romanian hierarchs.
