Abstract

A discussion on the identity of painter Simion Silaghi-Sălăgeanu, otherwise a figure well known to researchers of Transylvanian Romanian art, is justified for three reasons: the extraordinary longevity, between the first (1773) and the last attestation (1853) spanning eight decades, to which should be added the childhood and apprenticeship years; the use of three patronymics: Silaghi, Sălăgeanu, Selagescu and, again, Sălăgeanu, and the identification of new archival sources, with extremely relevant and valuable information referring to the artist’s family. The results of a recent investigation, presented in this study, highlight the fact that the artist had a homonymous son, born in 1789, who was painter as well, and whose activity can be recorded beginning with 1829 until the middle of the 19thcentury. It is possible that the son was identical with the painters who, in 1848 and 1853, used the appellatives of Simion Selagescu, respectively Simion Sălăgeanu. Yet, there is a possibility that the later were different persons, in which case they belong to a third generation. Unfortunately, the lack of documents prevents us from establishing the direct lineage, in the conditions of which the first Simion Silaghi had three sons.
